Laughton was a genius a word I almost never use and the film is a masterpiece another word I almost never use. The casting and performances are perfect, as are the photography and production design and editing, and, and, and I'm not going to give a synopsis, because, first, spoiler and because it is such a unique film it sort of defies description.
It must be experienced to be understood. The fact that Laughton never made another film because Night of the Hunter didn't succeed commercially in its day because the studio didn't promote it properly adds poignance to the history of this remarkable film.
Recommend watching Mitchum, in an interview he gave late in life, discuss working on this film; you can see it on YT. I found it first on TMC. This is my favorite movie.
The black and white photography, the beauty and depth of Robert Mitchum's singing voice and the lyric river the two children float down on a skiff to escape him as he hunts them through the night..
It is a really visual and beautiful film. Shelly Winters was never more beautiful than when photographed as dead and sitting in an old car submerged in the river, her hair floating outward with the river weed.
It also contrasts the crazy evil of Mitchum, dressed up as a Preacher with the innocence of the children. Lilian Gish is the good woman who finds them and protects them from him, literally with a shotgun.
My favorite part is when he pops up after a night of suspense in the house and she shoots him. He runs, hopping and yelping in pain into the barn.
Very satisfying moment. Great acting and quietness in this movie. This is so under rated!! Very scary. R Mitchum is so scary in this. You will never forget the the under water shot!!!
Say no more. Watch it! Charles Laughton's only foray into directing produced one of the great movies and, arguably, Robert Mitchum's best role.
Unfortunately, to the chagrin and great disappointment of Laughton, the movie was not well received. However, it has subsequently been recognized by both audiences and critics as a masterpiece of suspense.
In my opinion it ranks with the best of Alfred Hitchcock. Robert Mitchum has never been creepier or more menacing.
The terror instilled in the children by his evil character is like a nightmare. Adults will not believe them until it is too late.
Their only recourse is to flee with the evil in pursuit. A truly chilling movie for those with imagination and whose sensibilities have not been deadened by modern slasher movies.
This movie has plot and suspense which builds to a crescendo. To enjoy it requires actually watching and listening. I streamed this movie via Amazon Prime.
It is a magnificent film. It took a long time to achieve its reputation. I remember upon first seeing it, assuming that it was considered a great classic, only to be shocked later on at discovering it was a failure in its day, both financially and even critically.
The truly bad thing is that Laughton did not live to see his intensely dark vision appreciated for the masterpiece it was.
This is true both stylistically and in its deeply disturbing undercurrents. Laughton wanted to bring much of the visual sense of silent film to his movie and not only insisted that it be shot in black and white, but freely borrowed German Expressionist techniques that lent a distorted, surrealistic, dreamlike look and feel to the film.
This, at a time when film was increasingly leaning toward naturalism and location shooting, was guaranteed to perplex the average audience.
Every moment has been considered. But this clashed with the current, more naturalistic style which tried to portray life on film as if you were simply seeing it somehow, as if three was no camera.
The film was also too dark and terrifying for its time. In , so-called scary movies were about giant squids or ants on the loose or an invasion from outer space.
This was much too real and closer to home. The victims here were decent people, not the unban people who lived in the shadows in crime films.
And the ones in most peril of their lives were a young boy of eleven and his even younger sister.
It was too scary to contemplate. It leaves no breathing room. Mitchum is an absolute terror in this film. He had the physical presence and a powerful, stentorian voice and could project a sense of menace with little effort.
Much of this, I believe, came from his wild, wandering youth, expelled from school, riding the rails, roustabouting from job to job - much like Steve McQueen - but more intimidating.
He becomes more and more of a monster as the film progresses, at one point seeming like the Frankenstein monster as he pursues the children with his arms momentarily stretched out before him.
The Reverend Powell also has a sexual magnetism that enables him to attract women and enrapture audiences in his sermons on good and evil, words which he famously has tattooed one on each hand.
He fools the townsfolk of the small West Virginia town. This is in the midst of the Great Depression, a time when even children are on the roads.
In a touching scene a farm woman hands out potatoes to children who come to her back door then shushes them away brusquely, lest she begin to feel too much.
