Charlie and Linda try to keep their con of Nadine going while Rita and a new psychic fraud are hot on their heels.

Also: a turf war breaks out after a brawl between Fonso and White Tony during a Roma funeral. The Gypsy council make a surprise ruling that upsets Fonso; Charlie and Linda try to finish their con of Nadine; and Nick gets sad news about Emma.

An act of betrayal and a new vision of Nick in danger surface, causing Charlie and Linda to face their marital troubles. Also: Fonso tries to shore up his power.

Fonso tries to protect his daughter from an arranged marriage. Also: Charlie and Linda are at a crossroads after coming across a dead body; receiving a shocking confession; and noticing a sudden turn by Eduardo.

In the season finale, Charlie and Linda attempt a big con at Drina and Little Tony's wedding, but a surprising alliance and a haunting new vision bring about a shocking conclusion.

At its best, the show mimics the stylized visuals, outlandish violence, and comic cynicism of early episodes of Breaking Bad-though, so far, it lacks the clarity and the focus to make its story half as thoughtful.

We'll be curious to see what the second half of the season delivers, but its uneven presentation thus far, torn between grounded and outlandish, fails to give a proper platform to its star.

Shut Eye could eventually pay out; the cards for the last six episodes are still face down. But to find out, you'd have to walk through that door.

I had a couple, "This is a good, different world for a TV show" moments, before Shut Eye too often left the unique behind for a more conventional con man story and stale cable boundary-pushing on sex and violence and exhausted-looking antiheroes.

Being a boring show is Shut Eye's biggest sin, but that only tells part of the story. The show was basically bursting with plot points, and none of them seemed to land.

This isn't the first time Donovan has portrayed a con artist -- think of his role as burned spy Michael Westen in USA Network's long-running series Burn Notice -- but this time it's different.

His character doesn't want to be the good guy. With an utterly unique setting and appealing actors, this drama intrigues, but it has so many subplots and side characters that keeping it all straight requires patience.

There's no sense of spirit in these characters, and the just-sufficient fascination of the entire operation is owed almost exclusively to the cast, with special nods to Donovan, Strickland, and the indomitable Rossellini.

It would help if, in the early episodes, Shut Eye would make more clear what tone it wants to take: hard-boiled action, lighthearted caper, dark drama with some fantastical elements.

Shut Eye has plenty to offer its audience, but it struggles early on to find exactly what the focus of the series should be.
