If you don't require credibility and are satisfied with purely impossible, mindless spectacle as most people are then this is the movie for you.
What this movie is actually about is over the top computer graphics which is interesting to a degree in and of itself so, one star for that , and there's a lot of emotionalism for those who operate primarily on that level so, one star deducted for that.
If you're a realist as I am , forget about it. If you do watch this, when it's over, ask yourself: Are rich people really the best choice for repopulating the world?
The ones who made their fortunes by despoiling it in the first place? The most annoying depiction of utterly incompetent people tripping from one absolutely over the top cataclysmic event to another with darwin-defying ineptness and sheer breathtaking predictability at every turn.
Woody Harelson's character is probably the most likeable and he dies, sooooo if that tells you anything.
This might have been the stupidest, LCD, manipulative piece of excrement film I've ever watched all the way through, which I mostly blame on the always watchable Cusack, and some pretty heroic efforts by some of the character actors with a script that must have been perceptible by odour from Mars orbit.
Pretty good disaster flick. Best scenes are 1 mom watching TV in kitchen, Calif Gov not identified but its obviously Schwarzenegger holding a Press conference and says "The worst is over" and 1 second later a huge earthquake hits.
Terrific special effects, nonstop action practically from very beginning to very end. Us older guys survived the end of the world twice lol. I can no longer watch this movie without calling Adrian Dr Crybaby.
The crybaby speech he gives while on the Arc to the other heads of the other Arcs is absolutely hilarious.
Noah Curtis, Jackson's son is so irritating thru the entire movie. Dr Gordon is fantastic and is one of the funnest parts of the movie who gets some of the best lines and good physical comedy.
I think this is less a disaster movie than a comedy I don't think it was meant to be intentional but it just comes out that way similiar to Terminator 3 is less an action movie than an unintenional comedy.
As fa as disaster movies go the effects are good as only you'd epect from Roland Emmerich. John Cusack is always enjoyable and he does the best he can with the script.
The blu ray version looks and sounds good on a 4K TV despite not having an upscaling player. Its a much better film I think than say Deep Impact.
Wood Harrelson kills it as the conspiracy nut. Oliver Plat nails it as the character you have to and want to hate. The interesting side story on the cruise ship with the poseideon adventure feel was very entertaining.
Added to my collection with all the other disaster movies i can't get enough of the stupid fun. Well, is it Shakespear?
It is not coincidence that the "artsy flicks" which are all released at the end of the year to very limited audiences do very little at the box office.
This is what it is.. I packed this with another film like it, "San Andreas" and we had a blast. The kids loved it.
I got the special addition, two disc blu ray. I did what they called "shopping" and got it for less then Wally World. No I did not go for a digital download.
I have a 4K TV, so this was great. As I said, a great diversion movie. It is a disaster movie. If you want to entertain the kids etc this works.
Ahh I remember when Star Wars got bad reviews I like all these disaster movies. Not even close to being realistic, just fun to watch.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. It's an easy film to dislike from an intellectual level, artistically as well, while the science fiction boffins no doubt had kittens where the science was concerned.
It's also easily one hour too long in length, and come the second half of the marathon it starts to sag. There's only so many times you can watch your lead protagonists escape crumbling carnage - via various modes of transport - before the fun factor begins to wane.
The carnage effects are grade "A" stuff, eye popping and ear splintering, Emmerich is a master at this sort of thing, and with a likable cast comfortably chewing through the safe disaster film making screenplay, it's a very decent popcorn blockbuster.
It also isn't afraid to explore some dark moments, all of which - while not all being a surprise - strike strong emotional chords.
It knows its disaster movie roots and is happy to tug on them. The blockbuster movie loving public lapped it up, they often love this stuff, they just want to see the world exploding and chases and crashes and humans imploding or being heroic.
If you have to strip it bare on any sort of cerebral level, then of course it's naked. But fully clothed, attired purely in modern film popcorn clobber, then it's grand dramatic and exciting fun.
And this even as you have to massage your buttocks at the two hour mark. The Movie Diorama. Roland "Recipe for Disaster" Emmerich returns to his comfort zone.
But instead of an alien invasion causing the destruction of an American city, or the environment teaching humanity a lesson by freezing yet another bustling city, he instead opts for the entire planet.
See you later. Goodbye ol' chap. Emmerich attempts to convey his most important message yet. The world is not enough.
He needs more planets to destroy. More CGI chaos to conduct. The yearning for omnipotence. Somebody stop him before we get the sequel '3,,', when the universe implodes.
I cannot be dealing with another one-dimensional mish-mash of destruction with no literary engagement whatsoever. The world is suffering from cataclysms due to a solar flare and stuff, so it's up to family man Jackson to save his, well, family by outrunning the San Andreas fault, Yellowstone caldera and a colossal 1,m tsunami.
Let's not beat around the incinerated bush as they say, chances are you watched this for the apocalyptic mayhem that Emmerich meticulously orchestrated.
In which case good for you. The visual splendour and all-round screams of innocent civilians falling through the cracks of doom, will certainly keep viewers..

Ben Kenigsberg. Joshua Rothkopf. Cusack, with his one-of-the-guys face and his nice way with child actors, does creditable work as an Average American Dad trying to put things right.
Lisa Schwarzbaum. Laremy Legel. Sara Vilkomerson. Even though this movie's running time of two and a half hours is about one hour too long, there's still some pretty cool disaster stuff on the way.
