The army projectionist played the reels out of order, but it didn't seem to matter — there's nothing like a war to turn the absurd into the everyday.

I was an instant fan and bought a bootleg cassette of Allen's standup while on leave in Vung Tau. The scene in the restaurant where Woody vacillates between losing his change from a 20 as he has to flee the pursuing mobsters or being caught has stayed in my memory for years.

It's a New York that no longer exists, one that still has a bohemian, undeveloped, Top Shop-free SoHo, the musty glory of Pageant Books and Tower Records, and movie theatres where you could actually find a Marx Brothers film.

Allen's trio of complicated sisters are his most vividly and lovingly written female characters: fallible, but not judged harshly for it — the casting was impeccable.

And Allen has written, next to Alvy Singer, his best role for himself as well. Everything about this film feels painterly, wistful and wise, splashed in autumnal hues and capturing, in two hours, the last gasp of romantic, contemporary, artistically vibrant New York.

It's also the last film that dodges the bitterness of his later work. A tense and morally sound film with genuine gravitas. Allen's script could be applied to Kissinger, Nixon, Obama and hundreds of others in power who are shielded by their respectability from facing up to their crimes.

A quiet masterpiece. Makes most of his other works seem lightweight by comparison. The chemistry between the two leads has never been bettered and neither has Allen's performance as a lead actor, except perhaps in Manhattan.

But Annie Hall trumps Manhattan because Diane Keaton - the best female Allen interpreter in her greatest role — is equal to Allen in terms of screen time and dialogue.

She's the most completely realised of his female characters, from her ties-and-checks wardrobes to her off-beat remarks. In the rom-com genre, neither the character nor the film has ever been bettered.

It's possible to be viewed as both a lightly humorous tragedy and a darkly tragic farce and comes the closest, out of all of Allen's films, to capturing the outspoken artist's true opinion of himself.

The black and white cinematography is heart-swellingly beautiful throughout, while Rhapsody In Blue and fireworks combine to create one of the great, iconic openings in movie history.

Naturally, Allen viewed the film as a failure, making it feel all the more perfect. Two characters contemplate the end of their relationship against the musical backdrop of a solo violin.

The orchestra swells and overwhelms the violin as we simultaneously see the city effortlessly absorb the characters and their relationship. The Coen brothers pay homage to the book by retaining much of the story; framing it squarely in the eyes of the original narrator Mattie Ross and ending the film like the book, 25 years after the events depicted.

A marvellous film. But the film is a better watch all-round, and went on to become the highest grossing horror movie of all time. In truth it would have been a folly not to include this Tinseltown classic.

This dramatic retelling of the events preceding, during and following the American Civil War is rightly feted.

This version of Emma plays up the humour and bite of the source material, adhering a little less closely than some Austen-ites might like for a better on-screen effect.

But much of the same spirit, and those period costumes, remains. Upon its release in — just a year after the book was published — it was regarded as a powerful statement of intent from the then fledgling movie industry.

The tone is exquisite, capturing the ideas of dignity, service and loyalty impeccably. Wiseguy, by journalist Nicolas Pileggi, is a celebrated work of non-fiction that told the story of mobster-turned-FBI informant Henry Hill and his life in and around the Lucchese family for 25 years.

Martin Scorsese, who knew this subject intimately, was the ideal director to bring this fascinating story to life.

His film, retitled Goodfellas, is possibly the greatest gangster movie of all time. An ominous story of a husband and wife attempting to recover from the death of their daughter by staying in Venice, it reeks of menacing and barely disguised violence.

A startling, terrifying film that lingers long in the memory. Richard Attenborough sparkles as the psychopathic gangster, while the criminal underbelly of interwar Brighton is also brought chillingly to life.

Film: Directo r: Stanley Kubrick. The subject material — essentially paedophilia — had to be toned down in the censorious Sixties and much of the graphic sexual scenes contained in the book had to be implied on film.

That Kubrick made such a colourful and provocative film is a testament to his genius behind the camera. A critical and commercial success, David O. A superlative and sympathetically handled adaptation — a fact that deserves mention because of the sensitive subject material of bipolar disorder — it surprises, entertains and provokes in equal measure.

Bradley Cooper is astounding in a serious role, and Jennifer Lawrence demonstrates a maturity way beyond her years. Film noir at its finest and one of the best film adaptations ever.

Gregory Peck mesmerises as the unbalanced Captain Ahab, while Orson Welles nearly steals the show with a wonderful cameo. How to squeeze that into a feature film?

Well, Tomas Alfredson did it with aplomb. This version is the one that is remembered to this day, though. There are no happy endings and no saccharine-coated pill to help ease the dissection of social class and no attempt.

It is the film that the book deserves. Marvellous in other words. There have been untold adaptations of Dickens novels, but this remains the benchmark.

Solid gold satirist Armando Iannucci took a slightly unconventional approach to his adaptation of David Copperfield.

Colourblind casting sees Dev Patel lead, an inspired choice. In what remains his most uncharacteristic film to date — yes, even more so than Hugo — Martin Scorsese shines an uncomfortable light upon the romantic and societal practices of upper class life in New York in the s.

Thankfully, it was the first version. It pays handsome and stylish dividends. ShortList is now ad free and supported by you, the users.
